Youth Spotlight: Jordan

Jordan, now a senior in high school, has been deeply involved with NAZA for many years. She first joined Youth In Action! (YIA) in eighth grade after her mother learned about the program at a community event. What began as an interest in youth voice developed into years of service as a youth advisor, presenter, and advocate for youth voice.

During her time in YIA, Jordan worked with NAZA‑funded programs to hear student needs and strengthen afterschool experiences. She represented Nashville youth nationally, presenting at the 50 State Afterschool Network Meeting in Washington, DC, and participating in the Youth Powered Conference in Chicago, where she and her peers secured $15,000 for youth‑led projects across NAZA partner sites. Locally, she shared her expertise as a panelist at NAZA’s Learn, Engage, Develop! Conference, offering insight into what young people need to grow as leaders from out‑of‑school‑time programs. Jordan credits these experiences with strengthening her confidence, advocacy skills, and building her network.

“By building close-knit bonds and advocating for other youth, I learned how to express my needs and advocate for myself.”

Since her time with NAZA, Jordan has continued to expand her leadership by serving as Student Government Association President, Captain of her Cheer Team, and Chairwoman of the Public Health and Safety Committee for the Mayor’s Youth Council. Last December, she was honored with NAZA’s Youth Leadership Award at the organization’s 15th Anniversary Celebration.

When reflecting on her experiences, Jordan expressed deep gratitude for the mentors and peers who supported her along the way, stating that “NAZA has given me a platform to learn, make mistakes, and grow into the leader I now am.”

As she prepares for college, Jordan plans to pursue a degree in Biomedical Engineering and continue her advocacy work in public health. She hopes that future young leaders will carry forward the work of amplifying youth voice in Nashville and beyond.
